Making Your Own Brown Sugar

This is really easy with a food processor.
Take 2 cups non GMO sugar (cane sugar) and molasses.
Drizzle in through opening as the machine is turning until you like the color and texture.

I have tried this with the hand mixer, not as good or easy. I don’t have a stand mixer…..yet…..but probably good to.

Knowledge is money.

Great Reads

Here are some great articles I have read over the past few months. My comments and thoughts are in italics. Enjoy!

Essex NY Organic Farm Coop
I just read this great book. The Dirty Life, by Kristin Kimball, I got it at the Lander Library. Fun, easy read. I went to this site just to see if the Farm was still going since the book was copyrighted in 2010. It is!

I like the model of the Farm a Full Diet Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), with meat, eggs, milk, grains, and vegetables. So great and so much good hard work

Grow some of your own because I don’t think this is in any of our back yards. But I am glad it is there. http://www.kristinkimball.com/essex-farm

GMO Health Report‏
No matter what the American politicians, senators, representatives, think they don’t pass legislation, voting against labeling GMO’s.
I personally will not eat them….or promote those businesses that make them.
Sure narrows the choices, but I don’t mind. Think of the health of this nation…..it is sad.

No GMOs for me. http://covvha.net/gmo-health-environmental-hazards

Caramel Coloring in Soda | Artificial Food Coloring | 4-MeI – Consumer Reports‏
Hope you aren’t drinking this stuff on any kind of regular basis. This Carmel color is in many products, including pancake syrup.

Coca-Cola’s ‘Simply Orange’ Juice Is Anything But
This is why I don’t, and haven’t, bought orange juice in a long time, no juice as matter of fact. Either use a juicer (love mine) or eat the whole fruit.

Homemade corn tortillas

Found this great old, heavy, well built by Tortilldora at a garage sale in Lander.
Upgraded, gave my new one I bought in Boulder CO to daughter Diane.

Very easy to make tortillas, I didn’t show that but you just add water. Use some plastic bag when pressing.

Tonight chips, in coconut oil and Croatian sea salt.
Happy eating!

Time to Plant Garlic

Hi all,

Time to plant garlic…actually a little pass time.  I planted this garlic October 16th.  I planted five bulbs.  The garlic planted was grown by me and harvested 29 bulbs in July.

You want to plant the biggest bulbs, biggest cloves. I plant soft neck so there is no scape. Each of my hard neck garlic bulbs had 10 cloves so I planted 50 cloves 4-5 inches apart, 2 inches deep. I put the screen over it just to keep out cats, dogs, and people from tramping it down.

They should emerge in March…when I will be the happiest gal on the block!

Happy gardening!

Potato Time and Greens

Still growing and eating, spinach, swiss chard, turnip greens in October!

It’s potato digging time! I love to see what is underneath. This is just part of the harvest as I dug half the bed the other day. The red are pink all the way through and the blue are blue all the way through.  Able to get more vitamins with these types. I purchased them from Irish Eyes Garden Seeds.
